Join Laura Silver author of Knish: In Search of the Jewish Soul Food, which was hailed by the New York Times as “a whimsical, mouthwatering, and edifying odyssey through New York neighborhoods and beyond.”

It may look like a simple lump of potatoes wrapped in dough, but the knish, that quintessential Ashkenazi Jewish comfort food, embodies centuries of human experience. Round or square, fried or baked, the knish is packed with stories of struggle, survival, and triumph.

The humble pastry has links to Eleanor Roosevelt, American politics, feminism, and the hills of Western Massachusetts. Want to know more?  Join us for a lively, interactive program to test your knish I.Q. You’re invited to share recollections, ruminations and recipes. Silver will talk about history and how the knish can help us make modern-day connections across cultures and communities.

To enhance your knish experience, you may order Knish: In Search of the Jewish Soul Food at The Bookstore in Lenox by e-mailing at matt@bookstoreinlenox.com or by calling (413) 637-3390.

Laura Silver has been recognized for her writing on food and culture in the New York Times, the Forward and NPR,  and has received fellowships from the Millay Colony, the Jerome Foundation, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. Laura curated the 2017 “Heroes of the Knish” exhibition at the City Reliquary in Brooklyn. An English-as-a-Second-Language teacher at a New York City public middle school, she is considered the world’s leading knish expert.

This free program is part of the Federation’s Connecting With Community Series.
