What responsibility did the Catholic Church bear for the Holocaust, and how did the Church respond in its aftermath?

Join us for a fascinating and thought-provoking presentation with Dr. Suzanne Brown-Fleming, Senior Project Director of International Academic Programs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and a leading scholar of the Vatican, the Catholic Church and the Holocaust.

Drawing on her groundbreaking research and her book The Holocaust and Catholic Conscience, Dr. Brown-Fleming will examine the role of Cardinal Aloisius Muench, a powerful American Catholic who served as the Vatican’s representative in postwar Germany. She will explore how Muench and other Catholic leaders responded to the Holocaust, survivors, and questions of German guilt and responsibility, and how antisemitic attitudes continued to shape the Church’s response even after the Nazi defeat.

Dr. Brown-Fleming brings decades of scholarship and archival research to these questions. Her work has been featured by the Wall Street Journal, Vatican News and other major media outlets, and she has appeared in documentaries exploring the Vatican and the Holocaust.
