Jewish Federation of the Berkshires Connecting with Community Artist Demonstration: “The 3-Dimensional Watercolor Paintings of Robin Brickman,”

Ms. Brickman, a picture book artist specializing in natural science, will show how she creates three-dimensional paintings for her illustrated books. Participants will also have the opportunity to make their own cut and shaped paper leaf or flower, using materials provided at no extra cost.

Robin Brickman grew up in Northern Virginia, where the Smithsonian Institution and local countryside were a regular inspiration. At Bennington College, Robin majored in graphic arts and botany.  She has long experimented in different art techniques, especially painting, drawing, printmaking, fiber arts, bookbinding, calligraphy, and papermaking.

These explorations are a foundation for the sculpted watercolor technique Robin developed in the 1990s. This unique method of illustrating children's books is created by painting, cutting, and hand sculpting paper into 3-dimensional art.

Her books and paintings have won many awards, including a New York State Museum Purchase Prize, Outstanding Science Trade Book, National Science Teachers Association, Children's Book Council, John Burroughs List of Nature Books, and Reading Rainbow selections. Ms. Brickman’s original art is in public and private collections.

This free program is part of the Federation’s Connecting With Community Series and will be followed by a kosher hot lunch. Lunch is a $2 suggested donation for adults over 60 years of age or $7 for all others. Advance reservations are required for lunch and can be made by calling (413) 442-2200 before 9 a.m. on the day of the program.
